[Jack Lanigan and his elder brother Matt were orphaned after the death of their father (1897) and mother (1900). They lived with their married stepsister, a sibling from their mother’s first marriage. Jack participated in different sports and made musical events at the Lads Club] Somehow I found I had a voice and could sing and practised singing songs of my two favourite artists, Eugene Stratton and G.H. Elliott. There was also another coon singer, Tom E. Finglass. I purchased a few of their numbers, bought an old book on step dancing and practiced for hours tapping my feet. We had a piano and my step-sister’s elder daughter could play. She played and I sang, then I taught myself sufficient music to play songs for myself. My pals [at Hugh Oldham’s Lads Club] got to know what I was up to and soon I found myself singing and dancing at concerts. |
