20 Sept., 1823.... On Monday, the 1st September, I attended in St. Peter's the last and most solemn requiem-service for the deceased Pope [Pius VII].... I sat in the gallery appointed for the chiefs of the mission and their wives; all other persons, strangers or not... might take their chance as they could in the body of the church, which was on this occasion literally full, and filled with all that variety of costume which gives such a peculiar effect to a Roman crowd.
