Edith Appleton in Bailleul - 22 September, 1915

from Diary of Edith Appleton, 22 Sept. 1915, page 56:

The town is now closed and hundreds and hundreds of troops are passing through on their way up - it is a sickening and heart-rending sight! These long columns of fine, healthy, cheery men march so gaily ot the music of drum and fife bands - but they must know that a great many will not come back and a great many more will be spoilt, with heads smashed, or short of a limb.
