When we listen to a performance, perhaps we subconsciously ask ourselves: what's this performance about? If you feel that it's about the music, then you can forgive or forget all sorts of distractions. You can overlook physical mannerisms. you can ignore technical shortcomings, if you feel that the player is the composer's interpreter. But if this feeling is absent, you might feel that the performance is about something else entirely...
