from Notes for Vaughan Williams's Talk on Parry and Stanford, 1957, page 95:

In the year 1891 there were early performances of Siegfried, under Mahler, and Parry generously lent me a copy of the pianoforte score, [which was] hard to obtain in those days. I remember how amused, but pleased, he was when I showed him a song which I thought I had composed, but was really a passage out of the third act of Siegfried.
