... the Gym, the very place in which I first met, during my very first term, those expert wind players of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was then doing duty as an anteroom to the platform of the Great Hall, where the redoubtable Freddie Haggis was conducting his orchestra in a programme of such old Whitley Bay favourites of mine such as the Unfinished Symphony of Schubert, and Ippolitov-Ivanov's 'Caucasian Sketches'.
