The crucial experience was hearing the great Charles Draper in a Wigmore Hall recital, some time after I had been introduced to his records by Roger Raven, the Vice-Principal. Draper was quite an old man then, and did very little playing after that, but the marks of greatness were all there, and he did have the decency to chat with me, an unknown and unbidden intruder to his dressing-room.
