Seeing a land-mine hanging by its parachute outside the guard hut or being chased in a London tram by a buzz bomb - these were experiences so common to millions then that it is silly to recall them; but broadcasting the Chopin C sharp minor Waltz as a clarinet solo in 'Garrison Theatre' with a pianist who couldn't read my manuscript - that was sheer terror.
