Shvarts was ill, and after the interval we played our Mendelssohn trio. We played well and were highly praised; people who had heard our final rehearsal were amazed because then we had been appallingly incoherent having had only three rehearsals; but now we were really concentrating, were not nervous at all, in full possession of our faculties so had no memory lapses, and in consequence gave a splendid performance. Straight away after the Mendelssohn we did Glinka's 'Doubt', also impeccably, but it is of course complete rubbish as music. This ended the programme, but suddenly up popped … more >>
