Pablo Casals in Royal Conservatory of Brussels - late 19th Century

from Joys and Sorrows. Reflections by Pablo Casals, as told by Albert E. Kahn, pages 68,69:

The next day I appeared at the class. I was very nervous because of the conservatory’s reputation as the best school in the world for stringed instruments. I sat in the back of the class, listening to the students play. I must say I was not too greatly impressed, and I began to feel less nervous.
