Mendelssohn's Octet, in which you complain of an absence of melody, has a tendency to the elaborate [...] and yet the frequent hearing of that admirable work, and that, too, in a spirit of careful analysis, is well worth the trouble, if it leads to the proper appreciation of an originality which never degenerates into anything extravagant.
