in Chicago - early 20th Century

from His Eye Is On the Sparrow, pages 174-175:

It was the first time I'd worked on the stage of a big-time vaudeville theater. We were getting only forty dollars for the three-day engagement, but any act was willing to take a nominal fee on a so-called break-in date, the whole object being to showcase your routine to the bookers. Earl went on and did the "Where is that partner of mine?" patter. Then I appeared in my gingham apron and funny hat and sang "Georgia Blues." I did other songs, and Earl did his specialty number. There was applause when we finished, and I went upstairs to our dressing room.
