This was around 1936, and I also began to listen to horn players like Chu Berry, Roy Eldridge, and Ben Webster, the [Jimmy] Lunceford band, Ellington, Andy Kirk. I guess of all those I was closest to Ben Webster, who became like a father to me, musically and personally.
