Alexander Mackenzie in Edinburgh - the 1860's

from A Musician's Narrative , page 65:

At one of these concerts Joachim, after finishing his own rehearsal, sat down beside me among the first violins and fiddled through a Haydn Symphony at the same desk. ... Joachim, then at the height of his form and fame, commanded my admiration by his great and pure tone, an exceptional skill in the art of bowing, and the intellectuality of his dignified readings of the classics.
