Alexander Mackenzie in Italy - the 1880's

from A Musician's Narrative , page 99:

On our way to Florence the first music I heard in Italy was Mefistofele (Turin) and Aida (Pisa)–admirable performances in each case. Several subsequent opportunities of rehearsing Boïto's opera were taken in hopes of improving a first-formed opinion of its merits. But the early impression produced by the disconnected scenes and mixture of styles remained unchanged.
