We had at our house (besides the Mendelssohns and Madame Frege, whose singing of his songs was indescribably beautiful), Mr. ---- , with his deafening 'Fortissimos.' Happily Mendelssohn put an end to the noise by playing the first book of his 'Lieder ohne Worte,' the manuscript of which he has given to me.
