Ignatz Moscheles in Leipzig - 5 October, 1847

from Recent Music and Musicians, page 339:

Delightful afternoon at Mendelssohn's and had much friendly talk about art-matters. He played me his last quartet, all four movements in F minor; the passionate character of the whole, and the mournful key, seem to me an expression of his deeply agitated state of mind.
