Alexander Mackenzie in London - April, 1886

from A Musician's Narrative , page 148:

The determination to honour the old master was carried out to the full. On the evening of his coming he was taken–on way to Westwood House, Sydenham–to the final choir rehearsal, when, tired as well he might be by the journey from Paris, he immediately sat down at the pianoforte to improvise on the phrases which had been interrupted by his entrance. His first notes after an absence of forty years.
