Joseph Szigeti - the 1900's

from With strings attached- Reminiscences and reflections, 2nd edition, enlarged, page 222:

The Russian people still had to make the best of what they had. Sometimes I would be accompanied on an upright piano with many of its keys missing, but my pianist played on undaunted. I used to marvel at the way violinists like Milstein and Naum Blinder (now of San Francisco) managed to play beautifully in tune on strings that – one would have thought- precluded any such possibility.
