I arrived at the Conservatoire in time for the public service of prayer*. Umnenkaya** was standing there taking part in the service. We shook hands and I left.
After the service we all went into the Small Hall, the chorus arranged itself on the stage, and I conducted the National Anthem twice through to the accompaniment of the imposing organ and the two pianos. After that someone read something very long and boring, then Frantsis recited, not very inspiringly, some passages from Ivan Susanin, and then the chorus sang numbers from A Life for the Tsar.
