Dargomyzhsky rehearsal in the morning. Tcherepnin kept changing his ideas about tempi in the Fantasia, resulting in horrible distortions. He then criticized my gestures. Kazachok went well though. Then Tcherepnin, considering that I had not made a good job of conducting The Wedding last time, took it over himself and did it in his own way, which was quite at variance with my own good intentions. Following him on to the podium, I attempted to bring it back to its previous form, at which Tcherepnin protested and we crossed swords mildly. … more >>
