After dinner I put on my dinner-jacket and headed towards Offitserskaya Street to take Umnenkaya* to Siegfried. I stayed for half an hour in pleasant conversation with Lida and her sistersm then we went to the theatre. She has a new coiffure, and as always looks most elegant. The box to our right was occupied by the Ruzskys, sitting in the one to the left was Volodya Deshevov, hence Lida and I were subjected to a crossfire of curious glances. Throughout the first act we were so buried in the piano score that I got a stitch in my side from the awkwardness of my position, so for Act II we 'shut up shop'. During the intervals we strolled about, and it was nice, but not as nice as it was when we had come to Valkyrie. I also do not like Siegfried as much as Valkyrie: despite the wealth of fabulous episodes - the Introduction, all Siegfried's entrances, the comedy of Mime, the cheerful forging of the sword, Alberich's abuse of Mime, the opening of Act III and the entr'acte - everything takes such an interminable time, is so needlessly long drawn out, that I literally begin to suffocate with boredom.
