George Paulsen in Grand Canyon - early 20th Century

from Jazz Anecdotes, page 78:

We stopped at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Claude [Thornhill] asked us to get out our instruments and we all lined up facing the canyon. He called off the chords and we played them and then listened to the echoes. Some very interesting sound effects resulted and we drew quite a crowd of tourist spectators.
