in Canterbury - late August, 1929

from The diary of Virginia Woolf. Vol.3, 1925-30, page 246:

Dorothea took me uninvited to stay at Canterbury with Canon Holland; & there was Bernard...Helen played little melancholy scraps of Beethoven which moved me; but Bernard snapped "What's that? Gilbert & Sullivan?" to snub her sentimentality I suppose.  And then, when there was talk of going back in the rain together, he stopped it.
