In the evening I went to the second performance of the Onegin/Faust programme and sat with Shurik Bushen*, which made for a very pleasant evening. Gabel sat by the piano the whole evening, making no effort to conceal his anxiety and making it hard for Gauk to play. Not only was he tapping his foot loudly on the first beat of the bar, but his shoes were squeaking, which I found exasperating. During the interval I went up to him and jokingly said, 'Stanislav Ivanovich, Gauk here and Tsybin and I are getting up a subscription to buy you some rubber galoshes!'
