in Royal Festival Hall - the 1950's

from Southbank Centre Archive:

A concert conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. He slowly waddled on to the platform, like a contented penguin, and, as was his wont, addressed the audience: "The B.B.C. have invited me to conduct this concert. The programme has been decided upon by the BBC. So, if you are dissatisfied do not communicate with me, write to the  BBC."
