in Royal Festival Hall

from Southbank Centre Archive:

Among so many (Klemperer, Arau, Kempe, early Colin Davis, the Smetana quartet…) one Sunday morning in 1963 (?) Attending a Philhamonia rehearsal for the Verdi Requiem under Giulini Walter Legge commanding that "Maxwell" produce more sound in the Dies Irae: Giulini wonderful: Schwarzkopf majestic and the altor (Christa Ludwig) flirting with Giulini. But what music making! and in 1956 or 57 breaking out of the barracks as a National Serviceman and coming to 5 p.m. organ recital by Peter Hurford... and not getting caught.
