Eddie Barefield in Kansas City - mid 20th Century
from Jazz Anecdotes, page 298:
I was in Kansas City when he [Charlie Parker] first came out to play. He sounded so bad that we wouldn’t let him play. He went down to Oklahoma and stayed about six months with Buster Smith, who really taught him a lot about his playing. And he came back and just washed everybody out.
