Sergei Prokofiev - 23 March, 1916, at night
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 23 March 1916, page 108:
In the evening I again went to the Koussevitzky concert. Needless to say, the main point was to be with Marinochka, but also to hear Alchevsky, who sang the long part in Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust. The work itself is tedious in the extreme, neither moving the listener with real tragedy nor beguiling him with lyricism, but the orchestration is in places so amazing as to make one gasp - with coloration that although written seventy years ago makes one think of Strauss (Richard).
