Borovsky's concert was on the 14th. Recalling his magnificent performance of my 'Scherzo' from Op. 12 last year, I was greatly looking forward to my Second Sonata, but was disappointed: the first movement was played without much warmth, the Scherzo too fast and consequently lacking clarity. The Andante was good, but the Finale went completely to pieces with an exaggerated tempo. Normally the Sonata is very successful, but on this occasion it was received coldly. The next day we lunched together at the 'Bear', and I amimadverted that Borovsky Musician was in danger of turning into Borovsky Narcissist, spellbinding the public with glittering passagework and pianistic effects while forgetting the heart of the music. He said that this was not yet the case, but he would take care not to allow it to become so. He had played the Sonata a week before in Moscow, and played it better there because neither composer nor fans of the composer's own interpretation were present.
