Fifth Avenue was entirely filled for several miles with people shouting for joy, grabbing one another, dancing, bearing aloft a coffin for the Kaiser. I rejoiced that the war was over, but in my ears resounded the words of Demchinsky, uttered at the beginning of the war: 'An inglorious war, seven against one!' Yes! Germany had been buffeted right and left before being broken. I went into a beautiful white cathedral.
