We students were regular visitors to concerts at the Philharmonia and the opera house. We always went to rehearsals, too. Having no money, we perfected the act of walking into the halls without paying, but with no fuss and great decorum, causing amasement and great consternation amongst the ushers and administrators. But these small ‘crimes’ were made up for by the immense store of musical knowledge which we gained in such an ‘unseemly’ way.
