When Menaka arrived in London, we worked together and she showed me a whole series of footwork and rhythms which she had been able to study since our recital in Bombay.  She had incorporated some of them into a new dance which she had arranged.  One day Edmund Rubbra came to play the music he had transposed or, should I say, translated from Indian instruments to Western instruments.  It was beautifully done, with great sensitivity.  After that we worked together a lot, and sometimes Nawab Ali Khan, who was a great authority on Indian music, would come and listen approvingly to the ‘translations’.
