Sergei Prokofiev in Paris - 24 March, 1924, at night

from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 24 March 1924, page 35:

I went to a Balmont evening, in which I could not participate this year owing to my agreement with Oeberg. Tobuk-Cherkass sang, boringly and inappropriately, although Tobuk (who in principle sings well) performed various songs to Balmont's words: Stravinsky, Tcherepnin, and some of mine. Balmont read a garland of sonnets, which he called The Golden Hoop, an admirable thing although few people had any understanding of the virtuosity required to produce a collection of sonnets. The atmosphere of the whole evening was a little chilly. This is sad, but I was not myself much taken with it.
