Sergei Prokofiev in Paris - 9 April, 1924, at night
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 9 April 1924, page 41:
From Koussevitzky I went on to a concert at which Villa-Lobos's Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon was performed. He has an excellent knowledge of these instruments and deploys a mass of interesting ideas in rhythm, sonorities, etc., but he lacks a sense of flow and I am not sure how worthwhile the actual material is. If he were twenty-two, I would say without hesitation that he has the makings of a significant composer, but as he is already thirty-two all one can do is hold back from too harsh a judgement on the less successful passages while awaiting further compositions.
