Sergei Prokofiev in Paris - 2 June, 1924, at night
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 2 June 1924, page 63:
In the evening Ptashka and I were again at the Vienna Opera for Don Giovanni. This is by far Mozart's best opera both from the musical and the dramatic point of view, and has lost none of its original freshness. The ball scene, with its three orchestras in three configurations, brought back vividly the time I, in full-fig evening dress, conducted on the stage of the Conservatoire. How daring, alive and inventive Mozart was! But if one is to be super-critical, the trick does not quite come off as the ear cannot pick out the three different rhythms, which can only be seen from the score.
