Delius in Royal Albert Hall - 19 January, 1908
from Delius: A Life in Letters 1862-1908, page 332:
A Dance of Life was splendidly played by the Symphony Orchestra & admirably conducted by Arbos - first class - better than Haym or Buths. Unfortunately the Albert Hall is so enormous that one could not hear anything - It might have been played in Hyde Park. Legges notice is excellent - Brigg fair went also splendidly and Bantock conducted very well - It was no public success, but found enthusiastic admirers among the young lot. I was very pleased with it - it sounds very well - I shall leave tomorrow morning at 11.

Buths had given the first performance of the work on 21 January 1904 in Düsseldorf, and on 24 October that same year Haym had conducted it in Elberfeld. The Spanish conductor Enrique Fernandez Arbos (1863-1939), initially a violinist but also to become known as a composer, orchestrator and teacher, directed the London Symphony Orchestra's Albert Hall performance on 19 January.
