Cyril Scott in In a church in Oxton, Merseyside - in the beginning of the 1880's
from Bone of Contention: Life Story and Confessions, pages 19–20:
Nor can I remember when I was first taken to church; I only know from hearsay that the experiment was a complete fiasco, for no sooner did I hear the organ than I burst into loud lamentations and had to be taken home speedily, the experience being ‘too much for my feelings’. So also was even my mother’s hymn-tune playing, and the time came when, out of consideration for me, she had to refrain from giving musical expression to her religious enthusiasm whenever I was in the house.
