Peter Hawker in Redbridge, Hampshire - 11 September, 1833
from Journal entry, 11 September 1833, page 52:
I fed at a pothouse in Redbridge, the ‘Ship,’ and had a delicious lunch and exquisite ale for a shilling, in a room with a Broadwood piano, and the best works of Clementi, Cramer, and Herz, which were the practice of the landlady’s daughters. Here we have a specimen of the ‘march of intellect’ in the highest degree.
