Notes

Lady Oxford was Jane Elizabeth Scott (1774-1824), Countess of Oxford and Countess Mortimer. She was a supporter of the political reform party, taking a number of its members as her lovers, including Lord Byron in 1812-13. Moore's diary entry does not make it clear whether she was also present in her box at the opera on this occasion.
