[Letter from Jemima Yorke to Mary Gregory, 18th March 1749]

I was at the new Oratorio of Solomon last Night which has some prodigiously fine things in it; so fine, that if it had not follow'd nay interrupted Samson, I should upon the Strength of the Chorus' & One or Two Songs have equall'd it to any Other Oratorio I have heard.

Notes

The first performance of 'Solomon' came only two days after Handel’s last performance of 'Samson' for the season. No evidence has been found that Handel planned to give further performances of 'Samson': Lady Grey may have meant that 'Solomon' followed too quickly after the previous performance of 'Samson' to make its full impression.
