Letter from Mary Collier to her mother, Mary Collier, 23rd April 1747

Tuesday my uncle carried us to see ye Beggars Opera, There was not a very full House, but ye Play was most Charmingly Perform’d, Mrs Cibber was Polly, & Beard Macheath, & all ye other Caracters [sic] by ye best Hands. I Can’t say 'twas so good a Play for my Sister Worge to see as some others might have been, as it was ye first she ever saw, There being so little variety of Scenes & Cloaths, Though she was highly delighted with that, & seems to be very happy.

Notes

Mary Collier and Elizabeth Worge were half-sisters. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Collier (1685-1760; lawyer, town clerk and five times Mayor of Hastings, East Sussex) by his first wife, Elizabeth Elphick (d. 1714). Mary was a daughter by his second marriage to Mary Cranston (1696-1768).
