Efrem Kurtz et al. in Venice - September, 1954

from The Paris Diary: Hyères and Italy 1954 and 1955, page 162:

Virgil made me get up at dawn Wednesday to go (with Efrem Kurtz) to a rehearsal of his flute concerto, a misty formless piece, elegantly played by Elaine Shaffer. The work is apparently a portrait of Roger Baker with whom we then lunched as Virgil pursued his sardonic advice.
