Du Pré, Hilary, 1942- in Blackheath High School - 5 December, 1961

from A genius in the family / Hilary Du Pré:

Now it was Jackie’s turn and, wanting to hear her, I slipped into the back of the hall. The atmosphere was afire with expectation. Everyone had heard about this phenomenon and her cello, and of her huge success at the Wigmore Hall, and now here she was, ready to play just for them. The moment her bow touched the strings, the shy girl vanished. Her command, freedom and total involvement transported the audience out of their everyday lives. They loved it, and showed it too. She had given a superb performance.
