Ned Rorem in Saratoga Springs - 4 August, 1967
from The Later Diaries of Ned Rorem 1961-1972, page 229:
At the Saratoga Performing Arts Center last night we and eleven thousand others head Van Cliburn. How was he? How would I know? simply not caring whether one young whiz this week whips a war-horse gentler or meaner than another young whiz last week. Do they weary of their wee repertory of shopworn chefs-d'oeuvre? At their fees? (From the standpoint of live composers, William Masselos is the most significant pianist today.)
