Ned Rorem in New York City - 19 April, 1980

from The Nantucket Diary of Ned Rorem 1973-1985, page 285:

Dine chez Noel Lee. Plays us a record of Dutilleux's Deuxième Symphonie, the sweeping first movement of which sounds as necessary and true as any music in a long time. If Dutilleux isn't finally "as good as" Messiaen, it's that he lacks the added zest of dementia.
