When we arrive in Fukuoka one afternoon, I go to my room pondering whether to lie down at once or smoke another cigarette. The carillon in the public square begins to play and what I hear is to me a little strange. The melody it is playing is "'Way Down Upon the Swanee River." I had a premonition that something must be wrong. " 'Way Down Upon the Swanee River" in Fukuoka?
