Shirley Gabis Rhodes Perle et al. - 22 April, 1976

from The Nantucket Diary of Ned Rorem 1973-1985, page 164:

With Shirley last night to Hugo Weisgall's new opera, culled by John Hollander from Mishima's The Hundred Nights. Wrote Hugo this morning that his opera glowed with passion , beauty, honest theatrics, and a sadness mindful of Renais movies. Longueurs here and there, and a weak leading lady; but the orchestral writing, especially at the start with those low sensuous cellos, haunts in respect.
