Ned Rorem in Santa Fe - 30 July, 1982
from The Nantucket Diary of Ned Rorem 1973-1985, page 364:
At the opera, Der Liebe de Danaë (with a glorious gold set by Ter-Arutunian), and a dress rehearsal in the driving rain of Rochberg's Confidence Man - worse, if possible, than Ward's opera [Minutes to Midnight by Robert Ward], because in aiming higher it falls lower with its wilful simple-indedness and whitish attempt to swing. Rochberg has nothing to say.
