Ned Rorem in USA

from Lies: A Diary 1986-1999, page 178:

Lunch here (two kinds of quiche and a pear tart) with Arleen Auger and her business manager, Celia Novo, then a long first rehearsal during which I play the Mahler songs better than she sings the American songs. She's not a child. But her voice is silvery, clean, elegant, and sweet as an icy stream in summer.
